History of Palestine Session 7

The New World Order Following WWII

Rather than writing an essay for the 7th session, I am providing links to three articles that I recommend that class participants read.

The first article is a short overview of the New World Order that was produced by the World War II Museum. The title is: “Great Responsibilities and New Global Power” https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war/articles/new-global-power-after-world-war-ii-1945

The second article is from Foreign Affairs Magazine and was published in 2018 during President Trump’s first term.  It’s entitled “The Strategic Thinking That Made America Great”.  https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/2018-08-10/strategic-thinking-made-america-great It goes into more detail about the creation of the New World Order after WWII and how beneficial that world order has been to the United States.  The article raised concerns about some of the actions of President Trump during his first term that were undermining the world order.  Well, the damage he did his first term pales in comparison to what he has done so far in his second term.  It is important that we understand this history so that we anticipate what the world order may be in the future and how it might relate to achieving a stable peace in the Middle East.  This article, of course, was written long before Oct 7, 2023.

The third article, if you have time, is also from Foreign Affairs Magazine. It was published in August of 2023, shortly before the Hamas invasion of Israel. It is entitled: “Order After Empire -The Roots of Instability in the Middle East”.  https://www.foreignaffairs.com/middle-east/order-after-empire.    The author relies heavily on the history of the Middle East to explain why things are the way they are today and what he thinks the future holds for the Middle East based on its history.  I think you will find that you are familiar with nearly all the history he references.
